Great news for borrowers today with the Reserve Bank holding the official cash rate steady, although there have been murmurs from major lenders that they may have to raise rates out of step with the RBA. Federal budget announcements to simplify tax deductions, but don't be deceived Recent budget announcement declaring simplicity of tax returns from 1st July 2012 by simply ticking a box is actually misleading. The $500 deduction only returns on average $150 to the individual in the 30% tax bracket. The vast majority of taxpayers with accountants at current receive refunds much higher then $150 as accountants ensure they maximise individuals deductions in accordance with the rules. In this instance taxpayers will be doing themself short if they take up the government's option. Our recommendation is always to build and maintain a relationship a good proactive accountant who will ensure you are kept up to date with the ever changing laws and benefits including many other offsets/refunds ie education tax expense offset, superannuation co-contribution.
